How To Care For Elderly Parents In India From Abroad

Doctor visits, medicines, emergencies and what 'trusted help' actually looks like.

Build a recurring presence, not a one-off visit

Most parents are not in crisis — they are simply alone. The single most valuable intervention is a trusted person who visits on a predictable schedule, files a report, and is reachable on WhatsApp for small things.

Set up the medical layer

Pick one hospital and one GP. Maintain a single shared document with prescriptions, allergies and emergency contacts. Pre-authorise a family member or advocate to admit your parent in an emergency, and keep a small emergency fund accessible to them.

Plan for the 3am call

Know in advance who picks up the phone, who reaches the apartment, and who coordinates with the hospital. A dedicated relationship manager who already knows your parents removes the panic from these moments.
